Eastermar (in Dutch: Oostermeer) is located in the heart of the Frisian Woods and it has a very diverse landscape when compared to the other parts of Friesland. The landscape is characterised by the many hedges of awl and wood, separating the properties of the farmers. This so-called coulisse landscape is very well preserved in the Eastermar area and maintained by the farmers.
The rural Eastermar is worth a trip. Though it is a very small village, you can do all your daily shopping there. For travellers by boat there is a very nice located harbour with modern facilities. Hotel Meerzigt is located in the middle between the water reservation area "de Leyen" and lake Bergumermeer. Both lakes are ideal places for sailing, rowing, canoeing and swimming. Renting a boat or a canoe is one of the options as well as taking a tour on the water with a guide.
The lakes are connected with ancient cities like Dokkum, Leeuwarden, Grouw and with the beautiful waters of “de Alde Feanen" at Eernewoude. Eastermar is an excellent stop before taking the ferry to the north sea islands Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. The cities of Leeuwarden, Groningen en Dokkum are all within approximately 30 minutes driving distance.
In the hotel, as well as in the local tourist office, hiking and biking maps are available for the ambitious or less ambitious amongst you. At our hotel you have the opportunity to rent bicycles. The long distance hiking trail ’Zevenwoudenpad’ passes through Eastermar.
